Restricting imports due to unsustainable production of goods is increasingly being discussed. For example, the EU has decided to restrict imports of animal products originating from animals that have been treated with growth promoters from 2022. It is also being discussed whether the EU can contribute to conserving the world's forests by promoting deforestation-free value chains. In this project, we investigate whether requirements for specific production methods for imports can make foreign production more sustainable. We discuss possible advantages and disadvantages of production requirements for imports and shed light on how production requirements work under different conditions.
The project is expected to be completed in spring 2021.
